Don't Break the Bank
Some retailers offer discounts if you show them
a ticket for a sport event like snowboarding or hockey, or even an
airline ticket or lodging receipt. Let
them know you're here as an athlete or spectator, or a member
of an athlete's entourage and you might score a sweet deal.
Some
retailers have access to 2010 tickets and can point you
in the right direction where it's safer to buy resold Olympic tickets. Buying
off the street or from Craigslist is dicey, but there are
resellers you can trust.
Athletes always get respectful attention in
Vancouver &
Whistler
. . . whether the Olympics are in town or not. It's what we do.
When you get out of the
"O" zones the crowds thin out nicely to a manageable and
safer level. There's also less chance of getting gouged
when you visit local shops located away from the tourist traps.
Slip away from the crowd and keep your eyes open for event related
specials. One place
to look is Taraxca
Jewelers. They
have an Sport inspired Winter Spirit Maple Leaf
pendant that was featured
on CBC TV.
Jewelry is always a lasting and unique reminder of any trip, and the Vancouver
2010 Olympics makes it even more so.
If you plan a little before you arrive
you won't waste time
tripping and stumbling around looking for cool gifts and
swag.
The secret is to plan ahead and get away from the crush.
Sniff around online before you get here, and email or tweet local
sales staff to learn more about special incentives and specials
offered during the Olympics.
Sometimes they don't
advertise and you have to ask ... don't be shy.
As in
all Olympic cities, hucksters love naive tourists and Vancouver
and Whistler are no exception.
Thankfully the cool independent retailers, those
usually not connected directly to the Olympics and away from the confusion,
will go way out of their way to get you make sure you have a great time.
They want you to come back later with family
and friends.
