| Opening Ceremony tickets did
not sell as well as VANOC wanted everyone to believe. On the day of show
there were hundreds of scalpers surrounding BC Place trying to dump tickets
at sometimes half of the face value. 3 hours before the big opening event
every scalper and private person we spoke with reported they could not
sell a $1,100 ticket for more than $800, and most of them were dumping
for about $400. VANOC also dumped thousands of Opening Ceremony tickets day-of into the stream, but surprisingly most people still purchased on the street, whether from pro scalpers or just average people trying to sell extra tickets. There were many very angry people taking a loss of thousands of dollars and the closer it came to the event the angrier and more desperate they became. For about a week before Opening Ceremonies Craigslist added about 4 tickets into the resellers stream EVERY MINUTE during the day and evening. There were literally thousands of tickets being dumped at a rate that was impossible to track. That evening on television you could see very large blocks of seats empty, and if you looked closely you could also see many dark holes between seats where spectators were supposed to be waiving flashlights provided by VANOC. It is estimated that 10,000 of 60,000 seats were unsold, an embarrassment to be sure and not a good way to start the Games when you consider Olympic sponsors base their investment on interest. As expected, mainstream news media did not report the scandal. Craigslist is the best place to find tickets because more often than not you can find incredible deals compared to IOC and VANOC gouging. It is also SPORT EVENT ticket chaos in the first days of the 2010 Olympics due to the lack of snow on Cypress Mountain. VANOC has been forced to refund thousands of tickets, maybe as many as 8,000 because the hillside is no longer safe for Olympic spectators. On top of the ticketing mess busses are breaking down, getting lost, and drivers are quitting. When VANOC has to refund tickets it also impacts the transportation system because bus schedules have to be modified accordingly. Also, when VANOC cancels your event ticket they do not automatically refund the steep price for your bus. It is up to spectators to chase the transportation company down. Although VANOC and the IOC could not predict the warm weather challenges and lack of snow, many people are angry because VANOC did not have a contingency plan to help people with expensive tickets who were caught in the last minute squeeze. As usual, Olympic spectators are not foremost in the minds of Olympic organizations when there is any deviation from the norm. It's every person for themself. One angry ticket holder we spoke with in front of BC Place said it was ironic VANOC was giving away tens of thousands of FREE CONDOMS on the street because he felt like he was getting "FUCKED." click the PLAY ARROW lower left ...
